Gara Bridge

Route du Pont du Gard, 30210 Vers-Pont-du-Gard, France

Description:

Garsky Bridge is included in the list of UNESCO World Historical and Cultural Heritage sites. It was built to provide water to the city of Nimes by order of Marcus Agrippa, who was the son-in-law of the Roman emperor Octavian Augustus. The bridge was built without the use of lime and was part of a water pipeline with a length of 50 kilometers. The aqueduct consists of three tiers. In the lowest tier six arches, in the second - eleven, in the highest - thirty-five. The width of the arches decreases as you approach the shore. Shortly after the fall of the Great Roman Empire, the water supply ceased to function, but despite this, the aqueduct itself was used for a long time as a bridge for carriages. Part of the supports were hollowed out to allow the passage of oversized vehicles, which created a threat of collapse of the entire structure. For this reason, in 1747, a new bridge was erected nearby to meet the technical requirements of the time, and traffic on the Pont du Gard bridge gradually ceased. By order of Napoleon IIII, the ancient monument was restored.
