Temple of Diana
26-30 Quai de la Fontaine, 30900 Nî mes, France
Description:
The ancient temple of Diana is located on a hill, in the so-called Gardens of the Fountain. But frankly, the name "Temple of Diana" does not correspond: scientists doubt that this structure was built as a temple and was dedicated to the goddess of hunting. The question of what this building was intended for is still open, most likely it is part of a sanctuary with a nympheus dedicated to the Roman Emperor Augustus. It served as a bath or library. The time of construction of the building corresponds to the reign of Emperor Augustus, and the facade was restored in the II century. In the Middle Ages, the monastery chapel of St. Ursula was located here, thanks to which the ancient building was partially preserved. It was seriously damaged during the Religious Wars - a quarry was arranged here, besides there was a fire. To this day, only part of the building has survived - a large hall and two stairs covered with vaults. Once on them you could climb into the premises adjacent to the building, but now there are only ruins. There are two levels of the central facade with three large arched openings.
