Bonifacio, Corsica (France): Home of Napoleon
Description:
Resting in the north of Sardinia, you have a unique opportunity to visit France, because the French island of Corsica is located only 12 km from the Sardinian coast. Depart from the port of Santa Teresa di Galloura, in an hour you will find yourself in the cozy town of Bonifacio.
Having left the ferry, you will plunge into the romantic atmosphere of France. First, you will have a pleasant walking tour along the embankment of Komparet, during which our guide will tell the fascinating stories and legends of the island, and then a tourist train will take you directly to the center of the ancient town. Bonifacio is located at an altitude of 60 meters above sea level, so it offers breathtaking views of the mountains, the sea, neighboring islets and, of course, Sardinia. The town itself impresses with its beauty and medieval antiquity. Its narrow streets take you to the square with huge churches, then, turning, directly to the local attractions associated with the names of world-famous personalities such as Emperor Charles V, King Alfonso of Aragon and, naturally, Napoleon Bonaparte. The latter was born only 120 km from here, in the capital of Corsica - the city of Ajaccio. You can not miss another attraction of Bonifacio - the ancient Marine Cemetery, which is rightfully recognized as one of the most beautiful in Europe.
Tireless travelers also have something to do. If you are one of them, then we suggest going down from the city directly to the sea on an old, very steep staircase, which has 189 steps. It cuts the Corsican limestone coast across and because of this is called the “Scar of Corsica”.
Well, when the long-awaited lunch time comes, in one of the cozy restaurants of Bonifacio you can treat yourself to the freshest oysters under a glass of French wine. If you want to taste the masterpieces of Corsican cuisine, we recommend stuffed eggplant in Bonifacia with a glass of chestnut beer.
