Montparnasse Quarter – The Mad Years of Paris
Description:
Montparnasse, literally translated as the hill "Parnassus", in the image of the ancient Greek mountain Parnassus, the monastery of the muses - so called this quarter students in the 17th century who come here to recite their poems and speeches.
The memory of Paris is an integral part of Paris today. The Montparnasse Quarter will take us back to the “mad years” – the era between two wars, the First and the Second World War, when Paris walked, danced, entertained, rioted and created!
The poor bohemian fought here for its existence, and the nouveau riche was wasted money. Writers were looking for a way out of mental depression and fresh inspiration, artists - money customers and beautiful models, rich Americans - a charge of creative atmosphere and new talents. Here the currents and styles that entered the history of art of the 20th century were created, it was here that the flow of American dollars rushed in pursuit of the creations of fashionable artists, and patronage became an attribute of luxury!
The legendary cafes of the Rotunda, Dome, Select quarter still remember their famous visitors - Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, Amedeo Modigliani, Fujita, Guillaume Appoliner, Andre Breton, Peggy Guggenheim, Gertrude Stein, Chaim Soutin, Marc Chagall and even two Vladimirs - Lenin and Mayakovsky!
We will take you a walk through all the epic places of the quarter, visit many celebrities, visit the artists’ studio, visit the famous cafes and walk along Gaite Street, famous for its numerous theaters. Admire the diverse architecture of the quarter and, of course, see the famous tower of Montparnasse - 58 - storey skyscraper, which offers an extraordinary view of the Eiffel Tower.
