Tower of Saint-Jacques

39 Rue de Rivoli 75004 Paris, France

Description:

In the 4th arrondissement of Paris is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Tower of Saint-Jacques. It was built in 1523 in a real Gothic style, with the finances that the Butchers Guild allocated. In the past, the tower was the bell tower of the ancient, still Romanesque church of Saint-Jacques-la-Bucheri, where "busheri" means a butchery store. Since the church belonged to the people, the top of the revolutionary power in 1797 decided to dismantle it, giving stones for construction to those in need, but the bell tower remained untouched.

The height of this building is impressive - 52 meters, it was she who was the reason why the tower was then rented by the master of the low tide fractions for hunting. Melting, the lead fell from a great height through special lattices into barrels of cold water and turned into balls of the required size. Since this area is on the way to the holy Spanish place of Santiago de Compostela to the tomb of the Apostle James, every year many pilgrims pass through it.

The famous French physicist Blaise Pascal, in 1648, used the tower of Saint-Jacques for scientific purposes, namely, he first began to measure and compare atmospheric pressure at the highest point of the building. In memory of the scientist, in this tower, the inhabitants of Paris installed his statue of marble, where already stored 19 statues of revered saints. In 1981, a meteorological station was installed on the roof of the tower.
