Church of Saint-Germain'n-de-Pres
3 place St-Germain-des-Pres, Paris, France
Description:
The Church of Saint-Germain-de-Prés or the Abbey of St. Herman is the oldest once dominant abbey in Paris. The stone church is located on the left bank of the Seine, and is a monument of Romanesque architecture. The history of the church goes back to the VI century, when in 541 a monastery was built to store relics on the initiative of Bishop Herman of Paris, buried here, and whose name the abbey bears. There is no similar monument of this era in Paris.
During the revolution, the abbey was destroyed and looted, and a nitrate factory was equipped in the surviving church building. The current church of Saint-Germain-de-Preux is the only building that survived the abbey.
