The Chapel of the Wonderful Medal of the Mother of God

140 rue du Bac, Paris, France

Description:

In the heart of Paris, on Rue du Bac, is a small church. This is the Chapel of the Wonderful Medal of the Mother of God. It became a symbol of a sacred souvenir, which, according to the beliefs of the townspeople, saved the French from cholera.

On the night of November 27, 1839, a five-year-old boy appeared in a dream to the nun Catherine. It was her guardian angel who urged her to go to the chapel. Inside the church, Catherine saw the image of the Virgin Mary. She ordered the believer to cast medallions with her face. A few years later, a cholera epidemic hit Paris. The sisters made 2,000 of these medallions and distributed them to people. They healed them from a terrible disease. Every year, millions of tourists go to the chapel to buy a medallion.

In appearance, the Chapel of the Wonderful Medallion is an unremarkable gray structure. Inside it is a transparent sarcophagus, and it contains the body of the canonized Catherine Labouret. In the center of the hall, under the sky-blue dome, on the globe stands a statue of the Virgin Mary. It is surrounded by walls with a convex sculptural relief depicting saints. This place makes people all over the world believe in miracles.
