Conciergerie Palace

8 Boulevard du Palais, 75001 Paris, France

Description:

The Conciergerie is part of the Palace of Justice complex. At the sight of the powerful walls surrounding the building, it seems that they store the heavy load of all the executions and terrible crimes that took place inside. . Most of the Conciergerie Castle was built in the XIII-XIV centuries and was intended for the royal family. The new palace was one of the most luxurious in Europe. But after the royal court moved to the Louvre, the meaning of the Conciergerie was changed - a court palace and a reliable prison were built here. The king tried his subjects in the so-called High Hall.

The conditions of detention of prisoners were directly related to the size of the purse of the prisoner or his relatives, so separate cells were given to convicts in exceptional cases. As for the poor, they huddled in tiny 5-meter rooms. During a tour of the Conciergerie Palace, you can see all these cameras and even the real guillotine. Going outside, you find yourself in a yard where prisoners were taken for a walk, and where through the bars they could say goodbye to their relatives before execution.
