The Four Parts of the World Fountain

Observatory Gardens, Paris, France

Description:

Four sculptors worked on the creation of the bronze fountain: Louis Viillemo carved wreaths and festons on a pedestal, Pierre Legrain created an armillary sphere with an inner globe and zodiacal constellations, the animalist Emmanuel Fremy depicted eight horses, a sea turtle and a fish releasing a fountain.

But the most valuable is the contribution of Jean-Baptiste Carpo, who created four naked women, supporting the globe and symbolizing Africa, America, Asia and Europe.

On their fragile shoulders, these girls hold our land, surrounded by a hollow celestial sphere. In the plane of the ecliptic of the celestial sphere there is a beautiful ring with images of the zodiacal constellations. At the base of the fountain there are sculptural horse threes and bizarre inhabitants of the water element.
