Latona Fountain
Escaliers de Latone, 78,000 Versailles, France
Description:
The Latona Fountain is a beautiful fountain that is a worthy decoration of Versailles, and it is one of the most famous fountains in the world.
Over the fountain worked architects Le Notroy and Le Brune, who tried to depict the ancient myth of the goddess Latone. According to legend, Latona gave birth to twins from Jupiter and was cursed by the wife of Jupiter. The architectural composition of the fountain depicts the moment when the exhausted Latona asks Jupiter to save her from the Lycians, who insult her and threaten to kill her. Jupiter heard her request, and to comfort and protect her, he turns the peasants into frogs.
In the center of the fountain is Latona, surrounded by her children. And around it are frogs, as well as people who are not yet fully transformed. At the base of the fountain is a number of turtles. Work on the fountain was completed in 1670.
