Fountain of the Innocents
20 Rue Berger, 75001 Paris, France
Description:
The Fountain of the Innocents is one of the most beautiful architectural works created by French figures during the Renaissance. The fountain is decorated with an impressive bas-relief and traditional angels in the form of children.
In its present place the Fountain of the Innocents appeared in 1788. And until then, the fountain towered on the outskirts of the city, on the square next to the cemetery of the Innocents, in honor of which it received its name. The cemetery, in turn, was so named because initially only poor, mentally ill and unbaptized babies were buried there.
Subsequently, everyone was buried in the cemetery, and by 1780 it was overcrowded. Then it was decided to liquidate the cemetery, throw the remains of people into the quarries, and transfer the fountain of the Innocents to another place.
