Chatelet Fountain

France, Paris

Description:

The Chatelet Fountain is located in Paris, in the center of Place Chatelet. The square and fountain are named after the ancient fortress of Grand Chatlet, built here to protect the nearby Pont-au-Shange Bridge. The fortress was destroyed under Napoleon I.

The building tells about the glorious victories of Napoleon and the greatness of his empire. It is no coincidence that the base of the fountain is decorated with figures of sphinxes. They recall the campaign of Napoleon’s army in Egypt, which begins the scientific study of the history of this ancient country.

The opening took place in 1808.
