Greva Square

Place de Greve Paris, France

Description:

There is a square in Paris whose history is very sad. Now it is called the Place de Ville, and previously it was called Greve Square. The name of the square is directly related to its location: here, on the right bank of the Seine, a river pier was previously located, which was covered with pebbles and sand.

It was necessary to rename the square in order to forget the terrible events that took place here. Public executions were carried out on the square, so the center of the square was decorated with a gallows and a pillar of shame. And soon, these deadly attributes were supplemented by the guillotine, which was used here for the first time.

Nowadays, the square is visited by many tourists who do not know its terrible history. Hotel de Ville Square, 155 meters long and 82 meters wide, is a pedestrian zone. In the winter season, a skating rink is poured here, so a huge number of people will frolic on skates on the square. And in the summer, young people gather on the square for an active game of beach volleyball.
