The Garden of Catherine de Labour

33 Rue de Babylone 75007 Paris, France

Description:

One of the most picturesque places in Paris is named after a young girl Catherine de Labour. She is famous for the fact that during her stay in the monastery in 1830, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to her and predicted a future feat. After some time, the Virgin Mary showed her image to the young nun for the second time and ordered to make a medal with this image. Subsequently, this image began to mint in Paris, and it spread in different countries. Soon news of many healings appeared, and the medallion was called miraculous.

The gardens of Catherine de Labourt are located on the very place where the garden of the monastery of the Daughters of Mercy stretched with vines, flowers and decorative berries. It has been running its calendar since 1633. A feature of this type of gardens was the combination of an aesthetic component with practical benefits - both vegetables and flowers grew in the garden at the same time. The French even have a special term “Potager”, it is an analogue of the Russian concept of “garden”.

Once hidden behind high monastic walls, the gardens were opened to the public in 1977. The territory of the park occupies about 7 thousand square meters. In addition to a lush garden with many plants, there is a children's playground, cozy gazebos and neat paths for walking.
