Val de Grass Monastery

1 place Alphonse-Laveran, Paris, France | 5e

Description:

The monastery was built in 1667. Val-de-Grass appeared at the insistence of Queen Anne of Austria, wife of Louis XIII. She could not give birth to the heir to the throne for a long time. The Queen has vowed that in case of a miracle she will build a church in honor of the Virgin Mary. After 23 years, Louis XIV was born. Anne of Autra kept her word and in 1645 laid a stone in the suburbs of Paris, on the territory of the former Benedictine abbey.

To this day, the church and the premises of the former monastery are perfectly preserved. Many tourists believe that Val de Grass is very similar to the Cathedral of St. George. Petra is in Rome. Similarities can be traced in the design of the dome, and the use of Italian traditions in the decoration of the walls.

In 1793, during the French Revolution, a hospital was organized in the monastery building. Modern buildings have been added. A little later, the infirmary was replaced by a military medical school. Today, this place is considered the most authoritative medical institution. First aid is given to famous people in France.

There is a military medical museum in the building. In the vicinity of Val de Grass are located institutions of national importance. Therefore, excursions throughout the historical complex take place on strictly defined days.
