Area of the Nations
Description:
Place de la Nation is located at the crossroads between the 11th and 12th arrondissement of Paris. The square received its name on July 14 in 1880, in honor of the holiday of national importance - Bastille Day. The square is also called the eastern gate of Paris.
In the period of the Revolution, since 1972, the square, on the south side, housed the cemetery de Picpus, where noble aristocrats are buried: Andre-Marie Chenier, the famous composer Josse-Francois-Joseph-Benaut, Cecil Renault, the martyrs Compien.
The famous Square of Nations is a round square with a diameter of 252 meters.
The central place on the square is the monument “Triumph of the Republic”, opened in 1899. The sculptor Jules Dalu worked on the project of the monument. Initially, it was made of plaster, but soon - plaster replaced bronze. The sculpture is a figure standing on the globe in a chariot, which is drawn by lions and surrounded by various figures of a symbolic character. The idea of the monument is associated with the Republic, so it is addressed to the Bastille Square.
In 1963, a grand concert was organized on the Square, in which such world stars as Richard Anthony, Frank Alamo, Johnny Holliday participated. Thanks to this event, more than 150,000 young people gathered in the square.
