Initially, the square was an octagon, where in each corner there was a sculpture that personified a particular city of France. In its center stood an equestrian statue of Louis XV (thanks to which the square bore his name for a long time).
In 1790, the square had a continuation in the form of a bridge, thrown over the Seine. Subsequently, the bridge of consent and gave the name of the square. The name change occurred in a sign of reconciliation of the estates after the revolutionary terror.
