Sacre Coeur Cathedral

35 Rue du Chevalier de la Barre, 75018 Paris, France

Description:

From almost anywhere in Paris you can see this magnificent white building. Anyone who has visited the capital of France for the first time will not confuse this beautiful cathedral with anything. The Basilica of Sacre Coeur was named in honor of the Catholic feast of the Sacred Heart of Christ, and is dedicated to this temple in memory of the victims of the Franco-Prussian war.

Construction began in 1875 on the hill of Montmartre, at the highest point of Paris (130m). To strengthen the foundation, 83 mines had to be dug, some of which were 33 meters deep. The cathedral itself, 94 meters high, decided to build from a rare limestone, which in contact with water is covered with a special white coating. This is why Sacre Coeur has such a unique color.

The basilica is especially good when viewed from below. You can stop at the foot of the 237 steps leading to the top of the hill and see the temple in all its snow-white splendor. The staircase will lead to the main entrance of the cathedral, which is decorated with bronze figures of St. Louis (left of the entrance) and Joan of Arc (right).

From the observation deck in front of Sacre Coeur, a stunning panorama of Paris opens. In clear weather you will see the streets and boulevards of the city, and in the evening the city lanterns and illumination of historical buildings will create an enchanting picture of the holiday city.
