Alesia Street

74-76 Rue d'Al sia,75014 Paris, France

Description:

Alesia is one of the main streets of Paris, located in the southern part of the French capital and runs along the entire XIV arrondissement from east to west. It is named in memory of the battle that took place in September 52 BC between the Roman and Gallic armies.

The battle took place at the walls of the Gallic fortress city of Alesia. Famine in the city forced the people to surrender. Thus, this siege was the final stage of the eight-year Gallic War and ended with the defeat of Gallic troops under the command of King Vercingetorix of Gaul. This strengthened the position of Julius Caesar, who commanded the Roman army.

Alesia Street, one of the few named not for victory but for defeat. At present, the site of the battle is marked by the installation of a monument to Vercingetorix.
