Versailles

Place d'Armes, Versailles, France

Description:

Versailles was built under the leadership of Louis XVI from the XVIII century. Later, the ensemble became an artistic and architectural monument of tsarism. It is the largest in Europe and stands out for its unique completeness of design, unity of architectural forms and altered landscape.

Since the end of the XVII century, Versailles was an ideal residence for the solemn country receptions of European monarchs and aristocracy.

Before the French Revolution, Versailles was the official royal residence. Opened to the public and recognized as a museum in 1801, and in 1830 the entire architectural complex of Versailles entered the museum territory, also, soon after only 7 years, a museum of French history was opened in the ensemble.

At the end of the XX century, Versailles with the adjacent territory was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was in Versailles that many important events in French and world history took place. Here in the XVII century, many international treaties were signed, even a treaty ending the American War of Independence. The Constituent Assembly adopted the Declaration of Human and Citizen Rights. And in the XIX century, after the fall of France in the Franco-Prussian War, in Versailles, captured by German troops, the creation of the German Empire was announced. In 1919, a peace treaty was concluded that ended World War I and initiated the Versailles system of post-war international relations.
