Victor Hugo Museum
Hô tel de Rohan-Gu m n e, 6, place des Vosges, 75004 Paris, France
About the company:
The idea of creating a museum of Victor Hugo belongs to his friend - Paul Meris. Thus, he proposed to honor the memory of the outstanding writer on the eve of his century. Meris himself laid the foundation for the future exhibition by donating a personal collection for this purpose.
The museum opened on 30 June 1903 in the house where Victor Hugo lived from 1832 to 1848. On the second floor of the former hotel Rogan-Gemene on Vosges Square, the writer occupied separate apartments. Here he lived with his beloved Adele Foucher.
The building itself dates back to 1605, when Isaac Arnault, the king's adviser, was allocated a plot to build the house. In the future, the house was rebuilt, he had two balconies, which were not during the life of Hugo, and its appearance, unfortunately, changed greatly. However, the interior of the museum itself is very reliable. There are many personal belongings of the writer, including manuscripts, family portraits, the first editions of his works. Few people know that Hugo had a talent of an artist – more than four hundred sketches of watercolor and pen serve as a perfect confirmation of this.
This museum has a surprisingly warm atmosphere, which not only tells about the great writer, but also gives an idea of his personality with all its strengths and weaknesses.
