Palace of the Parliament of Brittany

Place du Parlement de Bretagne, 35000 Rennes, France

Description:

Beginning in 1561, the Parliament of Brittany met in Rennes. In 1618, the project of the architect Germain Gaultier for Parliament began construction of a new building, which today is one of the symbols of Rennes. Those who have visited the Luxembourg Palace will immediately see the resemblance of the two buildings. It is not surprising that in 1665, Solomon de Brosse, who built a palace for Maria de Medici, completely changed the original appearance of the facade of the Parliament building. Today, this architectural style is defined as French Mannerism. The best masters were invited to finish the interior of the palace: painters, carvers, sculptors.

The result of their work was luxurious interiors decorated with gilded carvings, painted ceiling plafonds, tapestries and paintings. On the roof of the palace are four gilded figures, symbolizing Justice, Force, Law and Eloquence. Unfortunately, in 1994 the building was severely damaged by fire, especially the unique wooden ceiling structures. The money for the restoration of the Palace of Parliament was collected by the whole world. The restoration lasted 5 years, and today the interiors of the palace are fully restored.
