Port Mordles Gate

3 Rue des Portes Mordelaises, 35,000 Rennes, France

Description:

The Port Mordles Gate is a preserved part of the Rennes fortress walls. The earliest wall was built in the III century, but the part that survived dates back to the XV century. The gate was the main entrance to the city. The name comes from the town of Mordles, in the direction of which led the road through the gate. Sometimes the gate is called royal, ducal or episcopal.

Structurally, they consist of two towers and an arch between them. Above the front door is a stone engraved with the coat of arms of the Princes of Montfort, who ruled Brittany from 1364 to 1514.

In 1793, after the French Revolution, a prison was placed in the towers of the Mordles Gate and the gate became known as the "Gate of Marat". However, after some time the former name was returned, and on June 11, 1926 the gate was included in the list of historical monuments of France.
