Ruen Cathedral
3 Rue Saint-Romain, 76000 Rouen, France
Description:
Rouen Cathedral is perfectly recognizable even without guides and numerous guidebooks, especially among fans of the Impressionists.
The openwork outlines of this temple inspired the great Claude Monet to create 36 paintings. Amazing, elegant, incredibly huge Rouen Cathedral proudly rises among the narrow city streets. At the end of the XIX century, the Rouen Cathedral of Notre Dame was the tallest building in the world. Its powerful and at the same time elegant walls mesmerize with their incredible, almost magical beauty. To appreciate the dimensions of this grandiose structure, tourists have to pick their heads up, otherwise it simply does not fit into the field of view entirely.
The pointed spire of the Rouen Cathedral of Notre Dame with a height of 152 meters dates back to the XII century, it is almost impossible to find equals to it. The left tower of the cathedral was built in the early Gothic era, and the construction of the right one ended only in the XVI century. Some of the windows of the cathedral are decorated with stained glass windows of the XIII century, famous for a specific blue hue, more commonly known as "Shartre blue". The stunning beauty of these stained glass windows is described by Flaubert in the immortal novel “Lady Bovary”.
