Clock Tower Street

Rue du Gros-Horloge, 76000 Rouen, France

Description:

The Clock Tower Street was the first pedestrian area to appear in France. The name of the street is associated with its main attraction - a tower with a huge dial. This monument is the most popular among tourists, it is the first thing they see when they get here.

The Rouen clock is one of the oldest in Europe, but its uniqueness lies not in this: in addition to the countdown, the clock also performs astrological functions. Above the dial is a ball showing the phases of the moon. In the slit below, the pictures are changed every seven days, thus indicating the days of the week. The dial is a 24-ray golden sun depicted against a blue star. On the dial only one hand, sentry, on its tip - a golden sheep with an outstretched leg.

Next to the clock is a museum where you can see what the watchmaker's workshop looked like, as well as visit exhibition halls dedicated to the history of Rouen and its architecture. The rooftop platform offers magnificent views of the city rooftops and Notre Dame Cathedral.
