Vauban Dam
Pont Couverts, Strasbourg, France
Description:
The Vauban Dam is one of the most interesting sights of Strasbourg, which was built to strengthen the Ile River. It was built in 1686-1700 by the military engineer Sebastian Vauban, in whose honor it was named. The purpose of the dam, made in the form of a covered bridge, was to flood the southern part of the city in the event of an attack by enemy forces. Today, the dam overlooks the Gothic-style Cathedral of Strasbourg, the famous Covered Bridges and a comfortable sleeping quarter called Little France.
In the course of history, the dam was subjected to major modernizations, as a result of which the stone arches were expanded and a panoramic platform was equipped, which thousands of tourists managed to love. It was also possible to get into the inner passage of the structure, where plaster copies of the statues of Strasbourg Cathedral were placed behind the iron bars.
