Birkenfels Castle

Ottrott, France

Description:

Birkenfels Castle is a ruined castle in Ottrott, France. The castle is surrounded by Obernay Forest. Architects and historians date the construction of the castle to 1260. The earliest recorded mention of this place was in 1289. The tower and courtyard belong to the end of the XV-early XVI centuries. The position of the castle made it possible to observe the old Roman road running from Mont St. Odillia.

The castle belonged to the Berger family until 1532 and then, before the French Revolution, to the Mundolsheim family. The castle turned into ruins after the Thirty Years' War and passed to the town of Auburn.

The castle is currently in poor condition. All that remains of it are the ditches, the wall and the lower courtyard. Since 1984, the castle has been classified by the French Ministry of Culture as a Historic Monument.
