Fleckenstein Castle
Description:
Fleckenstein Castle is a castle located in Lembach, France. Built in the shape of a boat 52 meters long, this fortress has a long history. The castle was built of sandstone. The original rainwater harvesting system allowed water and other cargo to be delivered to the upper floors.
The castle, as you know, began its existence in 1165. Named after the Fleckenstein family, it passed to the Vitzthum d'Egersberg family in 1720. The castle has been modified and modernized many times. The lower part of the tower dates from the XIII - XIV centuries, the rest - XV - XVI centuries. The inner door to the lower courtyard dates from 1407, the outer doors from 1429. In the XVI century, the castle was reconstructed and in 1570 divided between two branches of the Fleckenstein family.
In 1807 it passed to Apffel, and in 1812 it was owned by Baron Pierrebourg. In 1919 it became the property of the French state. The castle was destroyed in 1689. The main restoration work was carried out after 1870. Since 1898, Fleckenstein Castle has been listed as a Historic Monument.
