Greifenstein Castle

Griffon Mais Forest, Saverne, France

Description:

Greifenstein is the ruins of a once luxurious castle located in the French city of Saverne. Initially, two castles were built, which were separated by a wide moat. Grand Greifenstein was founded in the first half of the XII century on the initiative of the knight Meribodo Grefenstein, who had close ties with the Ochenstein family. Petit-Greifenstein dates from the end of the XIII - the beginning of the XIV century.

The older part, Grand Greifenstein, has the largest dungeon, which is 13 meters wide. The renovated tower stands between two castles. It was probably part of Grand Greifenstein. Its terrace offers stunning views of Savern, Haut Barr, Grand Heroldsek, the Zorn Valley and the Saint-With Chapel.

The castle was classified as a historical monument in 1898.
