Hohenfels Castle

Hohenfels, Dambach, France

Description:

Hohenfels Castle, located in Dambach, France, was built in the late thirteenth century and was first recorded in documentation in 1293. In 1423, the castle was destroyed by troops from Strasbourg, as well as during the German Peasant War, 1525. Built on sandstone and separated from the top of the hill by a moat dug in a bare rock, the castle had 6 floors, which certainly made it possible to observe the access roads to Lorraine.

To this day, fragments of the walls of the lower courtyard, the cistern and water collection system, the estate in the eastern part, and the northern wall preserved the stones to the third level.

Hohenfels Castle was the first castle in Alsace where scientific archaeological excavations took place. Since 1985, the castle has been recognized by the French Ministry of Culture as a Historic Monument.
