Ramstein Castle
46 Rue du Ramstein, 57230 Baerenthal, France
Description:
Ramstein Castle is a ruined castle located in Berenthal, France. It was built in the thirteenth century by the Lords of Falkenstein on behalf of the Bishop of Strasbourg to control the Zinselbach valleys. In the fourteenth century, the Lords of Ramstein turned it into a haven for robbers, and in 1355 it was destroyed by a punitive expedition.
Under the castle you can see two underground passages dug by French military engineers in 1936. During the battles of 1944-1945, they were used by locals as housing.
Since 1938, the castle has been under the protection of the French Ministry of Culture.
