75014 Paris, France 11 mZ

Description:

Tourists walking through the streets of old Paris, and do not suspect that under them there are famous catacombs. And in underground galleries, extending into the earth for 20 meters and up to 300 kilometers in the XII century, stone was mined.

The mining of stones marked the beginning of the construction of the famous Louvre Palace, Saint-Chapelle Cathedral and Notre Dame of Paris. The residential buildings of Paris grew, and underground galleries grew under the city.

The main attractions of the dungeon are signs with street names, an underground well and an altar. The narrow streets of the dungeon smoothly pass into large halls.

Over time, the catacombs were used for burials, more than six million Parisians found peace here. The ashes of the people from the cemetery of the Innocents were also transferred to the catacombs, after which they were called the City of Darkness. All the ceilings and walls of the underground galleries are carefully lined with the remains of the dead.

After some time, some of the catacombs were used as warehouses, bars and cafes, and today it is an opportunity to get acquainted with the past.
