Hohenbourg Castle
Description:
Hohenbourg Castle is once a powerful and prestigious castle in Vinjan, near Wissembourg. At present, the ruins of the castle only reflect how great its strength was in the past. The castle was built in the middle of the XIII century, on the highest peak of the northern Vosges mountains. Its origins remain unclear, with the first known residents being filmmakers known as Hohenbourgs.
Part of the fence remained from the castle, and the lower levels of the northern building were also excavated, a room carved from a rock with arched doors. The castle was modernized between 1420 and 1440. In the early sixteenth century, Franz von Sikingen modernized it. Partially destroyed in 1523, the castle was rebuilt in 1542. Abandoned during the Thirty Years' War, the castle was destroyed in 1680. During the work carried out in 1879 and 1880, numerous sculptural elements were discovered, from the Gothic to the Renaissance periods. Almost all of them were later stolen.
Since 1898, Hohenbourg Castle has been designated a historical monument by the French Ministry of Culture.
