Shiyu Mountains

Gabon, border with the Republic of Congo

Description:

The Chaiyu Mountains are located along the border of Gabon and the Republic of Congo. For Gabon, these mountains are the highest and most extensive. Among them is the highest point of the country - Mount Ibunji, 1580 meters above sea level.

Shaiyu Mountains, formed by sedimentary rocks, are distinguished by their virgin nature: evergreen tropical forests, untouched by civilization, and high-grass savannah. Several rivers flow here, including Gabon’s main river, the Ogove.

The mountains got their name from the French explorer – Paul du Chaillot – who visited these territories in the 19th century and described them.
