"Fortress Citadel"
The Citadelle Laferriere, northern Haiti
Description:
"Fortress Citadel" is located on the top of a mountain, near the city of Milot, in northern Haiti. It is the largest fortress in the western hemisphere. It is called the citadel of Laferriere or the fortress of Henri Christophe. Built by order of King Henri Christophe of Haiti. The construction of the citadel took about 15 years, and up to 20,000 slaves were involved. Equipment of the fortress is 365 artillery pieces, a reminder of this is still kept by cannonballs, the warehouses of which can still be seen in different parts of the citadel. A fortress was built to survey the surrounding valleys, to protect against the attack of the French, and if necessary, to repel the attack.
Nowadays, the citadel of Laferrier is one of the most popular tourist sites in Haiti. Amateur guides from the city of Milot will offer you to show the way to the fortress, as well as tell its history. Near the entrance to Sans-Souci Palace, the royal residence that serves as the starting point for the ascent to the Citadel, visitors can be asked to pay a small fee. They will also offer to rent a horse or more often a mule for a difficult road uphill.
Laferrier Citadel is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
