Georgetown

River Demerara

eastern Guyana

Description:

The length of the river is 346 kilometers, and the area of the basin is about 6 thousand square kilometers. The river is navigable 160 kilometers from the mouth.

Georgetown, the largest seaport and capital of Guyana, is located on the eastern bank of Demerara. It has a dark brown color due to the huge amount of silt, which brings powerful currents up the river. These currents are so strong that the ocean retains a brown color at a sufficiently large distance from the mouth. There are floods in the summer. The Demerara Valley is also known as a bauxite deposit.

Here is the famous Demerara Harbor Bridge - a long pontoon bridge (bridge with floating poles-pontoons).
