Fountain Bechstein

Englischer Garten, Bernhardstrasse, Meiningen, Germany

Description:

In Germany, the city of Miningen is located on the land of Thuringia. It is famous for its wide alleys, built-up historical buildings, wonderful alleys and an English-style park with fountains and monuments, as well as the wonderful Elizabethnburg Palace. One of the fabulous fountains of Miningen is the Bechstein Fountain. It was built in 1909 by Dresden sculptor Robert Dietz. This fountain is dedicated to the writer, archivist of fairy tales and legends of Germany Ludwig Bechstein. The fountain is located on the main road in the famous English Garden.

The Bechstein Fountain was supposed to be built near Miningen’s first residential building, but its organizers decided that a more cozy and affordable place would be in the English Garden.

The lower base part of the fountain consists of massive limestone, on which reliefs of animals and mythical creatures are located. Forest frogs, perfumes made of copper, make up the composition of the fountain on three sides, and each side has two outlets of water. On the head of the frog is a copper board with an inscription to whom the fountain is dedicated.

The fountain in honor of Ludwig Bechstein was opened on his birthday - November 24. The total cost of the fountain was 15,000 gold marks. The sponsors of the construction of the fountain were such famous people as Kaiser Wilhelm II, Duke George II, lawyer and banker Adolf Braun, as well as the ancient scientific club of the city of Miningen, the founder of which was Ludwig Bechstein.
