St. George's Fountain in Eisenach
Georgsbrunnen, Markt Plaz, Eisenach, Germany
Description:
In the center of Markt-Platz Square in the city of Eisenach is a fountain with the figure of St. George. St. George is the patron saint of this city - he is even depicted on its coat of arms. This fountain is ancient, it was created in the middle of the sixteenth century by Gens Leonhard. Over time, the location of the fountain changed, as did its appearance. In the Middle Ages, like many other fountains of the city, it served as a source of water, and over time this function was lost.
The Fountain of St. George is a rather large octagonal bowl decorated with ornament. In the center of the fountain there is a column, at the base of which there are small dragons, from the mouth of which water flows. At the top of the column is a golden sculpture of St. George. He is dressed in the armor of a knight, and strikes with his spear the dragon lying at his feet. In the Middle Ages, the fountain was a symbol of urban jurisdiction.
