August Fountain
Maximilianstra ß e 24, 86150 Augsburg, Germany
Description:
The August Fountain, located in the central square of the German city of Augsburg, opposite the town hall, appeared in 1594, when the city celebrated its 1600th anniversary. The fountain was designed by the Dutch sculptor Adrian de Vries and is the oldest urban fountain of the Renaissance.
The center of the fountain "August" is a bronze sculpture installed on a high column of the founder of the city - Emperor Augustus of Rome in full imperial vestment, with a laurel wreath on his head, 2.5 meters high. The sculpture symbolizes state power, Augustus extends his hand to the invisible troops with a call to protect the power and freedom of the city. The four figures above the fountain bowls are symbols of the four rivers that have long been used for urban crafts.
