George's Fountain in Augsburg

Metzgplatz 2, Augsburg, Germany

Description:

The George Fountain in Augsburg is located near the Stadtmetzg building. This architectural monument was created in 1565 by an unknown sculptor. Dedicated to St. George.

More than once this fountain has changed its location. It was originally set in front of the old town hall. It was later transferred to Stadtmetzg. In 1961, Georgsbrunnen was moved to the Church of St. James. In 1993 it was returned to its former place.

At the top of the fountain is the figure of the knight George in vestments. He kills his opponent with a spear. There is a statue on a four-sided stone. On each side, water is poured into special “shells”.
