Fountain of Hercules

Maximilianstrase 65, 86150 Augsburg, Germany

Description:

The fountain of Hercules belongs to the three most magnificent fountains of Augsburg. It is located at the entrance to Schaezlerpalais, near the August Fountain. The project Herkulesbrunnen worked Adrian de Vries (Adriaen de Vries) in 1597-1600.

The three-meter figure of Hercules is depicted in a fight with a seven-headed monster. The naked and muscular hero swung a mace at the winged monster. According to an ancient legend, Hercules had to kill the monster and burn the heads of Hydra, so as not to breed new evil.

On the lower edge of the fountain there are three naiads. These three women symbolize the goddesses of fate and time. Below are the men with fish and shells in their hands. They're sea gods.
