Mercury Fountain

Maximmilkianstrase, Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany

Description:

The Mercury Fountain is one of the magnificent fountains of the city of Augsburg. Located near the Catholic Church of St. Moritz. The architectural design of the fountain was designed by Adrian de Vries. The work went on for a long time - from 1596 to 1599.

The Merkurbrunnen Fountain glorifies the god of trade Mercury, who has been worshipped since ancient times in the area. At the top of the fountain is Mercury. In his hands he holds a symbol of peace and good luck - a caduceus. This is how he draws attention to the city. On his head is a helmet with wings.

In addition to the god Mercury, the pedestal depicts four heads of an eagle and two lion masks from which water flows. They represent a danger that could threaten trade.
