The Cathedral of the Virgin Mary

Hoher Weg 28-30, 86152 Augsburg, Germany

Description:

The Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, located in the German city of Augburg, is considered the main cathedral of the diocese of Ausburg. The cathedral is a five-nave church (the church has five longitudinal rooms), which was built from the IX to the XIV century. The main decorative elements of the cathedral are paintings on the naves depicting the Mother of God, which were performed by the German artist Hans Holbein Sr.

The main attraction of the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary are the five windows on the southern wall, located at a high altitude. They have stained glass windows made in the technique of “transparent mosaic”, depicting saints. These stained glass windows are valuable because they were made in the XII century and are the oldest stained glass windows in all of Europe.

For a long time, the landmark of the cathedral was considered a bronze double door in the southern portal, made in the XI century. It is divided into 35 panels, each of which contains a story from the Bible. Now on the site of the bronze doors there is a copy made by order of the cathedral in 2000, and the real doors are stored in the temple museum.
