Bayreuth

Palace of Festivals

Festspielhugel 1, 95445 Bayreuth, Bavaria, Germany

Description:

The building of the Palace of Festivals was built according to the project of Wagner from inexpensive materials, but with excellent acoustics. This is where the annual Wagner Festival takes place.

The theater began to be built at the expense of King Ludwig II on Wagner’s birthday on May 22, 1872. The building was run by Wagner himself. The theater opened with the premiere of the opera The Ring of Nibelung, staged in 1876.

The interior of the building is decorated with wood. There are no balconies or galleries: the orchestra is located right under the stage, so as not to distract the audience from the performance.

In the Palace of Festivals performed Card Mook, Hans Knappersbush, Karl Boehm, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan and other great conductors.
