Weissenstein Palace

Schloß 1, 96178 Pommersfelden, Germany

Description:

In the Weissenstein Palace is the largest private art gallery of the Baroque era in Germany with works by Titian, Dürer, Rubens, Van Dyck, and next to it is a beautiful landscape park in the English style.

The Baroque castle was built in the XVIII century by architect Johan Dietzenhofer. Work on the castle lasted almost 7 years, and interior decoration – 10 years. Giovanni Marcini worked over the ceiling frescoes of the castle, and the staircase complex was designed by the owner of the castle - Count Schoenborn. The prototype was the Paris staircase complex located in the Louvre.

The figure of Mercury, placed on the main building, reminds of the true purpose of the palace, its paradise essence. This is also evidenced by its interior decoration: the change of seasons, the cyclical nature of life, the female and male... This castle was intended for the rest of the Elector Schoenborn, but it was more and more frequent receptions and dinners.

In addition to the art gallery, the castle hosts music forums every year as part of the Collegium Musicum program.
