Altenburg Fortress
Altenburger Straß e 115, 96049 Bamberg, Germany
Description:
Altenburg fortress is an impregnable citadel in the city of Bamberg, built in the X century on the site of an already existing fortification. There is a fortress on the highest of the seven hills of the city, from where a wonderful panorama opens. From the moment of its foundation to the XVI century, the fortress was in the power of the church, first acting as a refuge in case of danger, and later turned into the residence of archbishops.
Under the rule of the archbishops, the interior of the fortress was richly decorated with magnificent works of art. But in the XVI fortress was destroyed in an internecine war. The bishops left it and for some time it served as a prison. Only a century and a half later began a gradual recovery. Now the fate of the fortress is in a specially created public association.
The front view of the fortress is supported thanks to the contributions of the members of the association, income from the lease of the Knights Hall. In the fortress there is a restaurant built in the XIX century.
The fortress is open to the public.
