Bamberg

Oberre Bridge

Obere Brucke, 96047 Bamberg, Germany

Description:

Through the medieval bridge Ober (Upper) you can get to the center of Bamberg – to the square Maximilianplatz, which is built a new town hall, shopping and pedestrian streets, as well as medieval houses in the Baroque style.

The bridge passing through the Town Hall tower was built in 1455. It consists of the eastern and western parts. On the eastern part of the sculptor I. Holtwitzer in 1715, crucifixes were installed over the middle support. This part of the bridge overlooks the Mill Quarter, which used to be proud of flour milling and leather production. Now there are student hostels and hotels in this quarter.

It was the Upper Bridge that became a compromise solution for the construction of the Town Hall. According to legend, the bishop of Bamberg did not give the townspeople land for the construction of the town hall, so they built a town hall on this bridge.
