Maximilian Square
Maximiliansplatz, 96047 Bamberg, Oberfranken, Bayern, Germany
Description:
Maximilian Square is the largest square in Bamberg. There are vegetable and fruit markets on the square, as well as various events.
The square is named after King Maximilian I of Bavaria and is built in the late Baroque style. The main attraction of the square is the New Town Hall, erected by Balthazar Neumann in the XVIII century.
There is also a fountain dedicated to Maximilian. It was created at the beginning of the XIX century by sculptor Ferdinand von Miller. The statue on the fountain depicts the king, who is surrounded by prominent figures of the city of Bamberg: Henry II (founder of the city diocese), his wife, Otto I (bishop) and Conrad III (German king, born in Bamberg).
In winter, the Christmas market is located on the square, which further revitalizes the street and makes it fabulous.
