Bamberg

Old Town Hall

Description:

The town hall was first mentioned in 1386, in the XV century it was completed, mainly in the Gothic style. According to the project of Johann Jacob Michel Küchel in 1744-1756, the building was supplemented with elements in the Baroque and Rococo style, taking a modern look. The town hall began to house a museum, which houses a rich collection of porcelain, donated to Bamberg by famous philanthropists Irene and Peter Lyudigami.

The town hall is unique in its kind. It was built on an artificial island on the Regnitz River. In the Middle Ages, the river divided the territory into urban and episcopal lands for a long time there were disputes on whose possessions to build a town hall. The creation of an artificial island and its construction was a compromise solution.
