Poppelsdorf Palace

Poppelsdorf Schloss, Meckenheimer Allee 169, 53115 Bonn, Germany

Description:

Poppelsdorf Palace is a magnificent monument of Baroque architecture located in the eponymous district of the German city of Bonn, which is part of the famous University of Bonn. The palace was built at the beginning of the XVIII century to replace the old castle that stood on this site, which belonged to Joseph Clemens - archbishop and Elector of Cologne. The construction was carried out by the French architect Robert de Cotte and was completed in 1740.

The palace complex is formed by four wings bordering the courtyard, surrounded by a ring of enfilades. In 1818, the palace was transferred to the city university and the collections of the Mineralogical Museum were housed there. The baroque park in front of the palace became the basis for the botanical garden. Today there are about eight thousand species of plants from all over the world. The palace was badly damaged in World War II during the Allied bombing of Bonn and was reconstructed in 1955 in a somewhat simplified form.
